Welcome

A letter from the Program Director,
Dr. Allyson Brotherson

Welcome to Hennepin County Family Medicine Residency Program. Our program, one of the most experienced Family Medicine residencies in the country, was started in 1970; just one year after Family Medicine became the 20th medical specialty. Thirty-five years later we continue to train outstanding graduates in Family Medicine.

Our mission is to train physicians who are leaders in Family Medicine and Community Health and to serve our diverse urban community. We do so by providing our residents with extensive learning opportunities in both inpatient and outpatient medicine together with emphasis on the behavioral aspects of disease. On graduation our residents are equipped to provide the full spectrum of family medicine services whether they practice in rural Minnesota, a bustling inner city clinic or in a suburban setting.

Our training program provides a rich obstetrics experience, and our residents develop expertise in the management of gestational diabetes. We have chronic disease management programs using a team approach to the management of diabetes and asthma. Holistic medicine is also one of our strong points and this approach is taught through conferences and in the weekly wellness curriculum. We offer two post graduate fellowship programs in Adolescent Medicine and Sports Medicine. In keeping with one of our values, which is to promote resident wellness, there is a weekly scheduled resident support group and a structured wellness curriculum.

Our faculty is as diverse as our residents and many of them have years of experience in training Family Medicine residents. They have private practice experience, fellowship training, and degrees in graduate medical education and public health. They are enthusiastic as we refine our curriculum to train Family Physicians for the future.

The Family Medicine Clinic is a busy urban clinic located in Midtown Minneapolis. It serves as a medical home for a large Hispanic community and other cultures in a culturally diverse neighborhood. Here faculty and residents, work side by side with mid-level providers, nurses and interpreters to provide excellent care to our patients. For the last 5 years, our hospital, the Hennepin County Medical Center, has been named one of the 100 best hospitals in the country. We are so proud to be a part of this institution.

I invite you to take a closer look at our residency program, better still, come for a visit. The residents, faculty and I will be delighted to show you around.

Sincerely,

ALLYSON BROTHERSON, MD, MS
